The UN Study Tour to Geneva was a huge success. With over 20 tailored events participants were treated to a variety of international and diplomatic exchanges.
Led by Carlise Richardson and coordinated by Sally Northfield, the group experienced unique insights into foreign relations. Highlights included:
> meeting with the UN Assistant High Commissioner for Protection at UNHCR, Ms Ruvendrini Menikdiwela to hear an assessment of the dire situation for the many millions of people displaced across the world, primarily due to global conflict.
> a tour of International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and briefing by two Australians working in the ICRC HQ in Geneva
> meeting Ambassador Gorely and staff to learn about how Australia interacts within the UN system in Geneva.
> sitting in on a UN in session – Benin’s report to CEDAW – followed by a tour of the Palais des Nations, including a visit to the Human Rights and Alliance of Civilisations Room.
> a briefing at the World Health Organisation (WHO) and a meeting with Executive Director, Mellissa Parke at ICAN, to discuss the existential threat of not engaging in global nuclear disarmament.
The tour group even got to spend UN Day at the United Nations!
